Among the schools mentioned are the Charlottesville Female Academy, the Randolph sisters' school at Edge Hill, Dr. White's Academy, Miss McPherson's school, the Reverend Boyden's Hopedale School in Keswick, Bloomfield Academy, the Midway School, the Northwood School, Slater's [dancing] school, Ridge Street Academy, Pantops Academy, Howards' school for girls on Park Street, the Piedmont (Meade's) School, and the Charlottesville Female Seminary as well as the public school at Midway. Gordon relates numerous anecdotes about the teachers and scholars, in particular a singing instructor named Deems introuducing the Christmas tree to Charlottesville and Italian and French teacher D'Alfonce who continued to wear his Union uniform after the Civil War. She concludes with her own experiences as a teacher at Stonefield.
