A letter, 1861 August 19, from [John?] Pelham informs "Murphy" about his payment due from the state of Virginia and the Confederate States. A letter, 1862 July 3, from S. P. Moore, Surgeon General instructs A. T. Foard, Medical Director at Tupela Miss., to inform medical officers not to reject recruits for "trivial defects" but pass all "who are capable of bearing arms" and remind them that certificates of disability from other doctors are not sufficient. A letter, 1863 September 30, from A. A. Mc[?] informs an unnamed comrade that there is nothing new in camp (Morton's Ford, Va.), speculating on action in Tennessee, and sending regards to "Miss Josephine." In a letter, 1863 October 29, C. Irving Harvie, writes his father Lewis E. Harvie, urging him to use his influence to have George H. Murphy appointed Judge Advocate and notes that Echols warmly seconds the appointment. In a statement, 1864 January 19, William W. Parker certifies that Henry A. Atkinson was dismissed from the army for medical reasons and that he sent a substitute who performed gallantly. In a letter, 1864 March 14, wounded soldier A. G. Sinclair writes to enlisting officer Capt. Cooke, enquiring about his exemption from service or assignment of light duties. In a letter, 1864 October 2, Mavervi J. [Keatts?] writes to Mary S. Murphy, concerning her wounded husband. An undated letter from Captain D. W. Alexander informs General Henry Heth that there "is no troops atall in Pocahontas" noting "being left at this outpost without any deffinite orders and ondly two companies of Cavelry ...I will scare the people up...and awate furtherer orders." An undated letter from Frederick W. M. Holliday recommends George H. Murphy for the position of Judge Advocate on the Court Martial of the Army of Western Virginia. General Samuel Jones forwards the recommendation with his approval on November 2, 1863. The collection also contains a Report of Vessels lying in the Harbor at Aquia Creek Va June 6, 1863, signed by Harbor Master C. F. Wager; a quarterly return of orndnance and orndnance stores for the Reserve Ordnance Train, Army of Northern Virginia, 1863 August 22, signed by Captain James M. Garnett; an application, 1864 April 26, by Jacob [Grubb?] for the exemption of waggon maker William Thompson from service, endorsed by Captain John H. Gibboney who states he has a contract with Grubb for wagons; and an untitled poem memorializing Holmes and Tucker Conrad, brothers in the Stonewall brigade who were killed together at the battle of first Manasses.

John Pelham, an Anniston, Ala., native, attended the U.S. Military Academy until the Civil War broke out in 1861. He served with distinction as an artillerist for General J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry at the battles of First Bull Run, Second Bull Run, Antietam, and Fredericksburg. He was killed at the age of 24 at the Battle of Kelly's Ford in 1863.
