Letters of Thomas Willis White [manuscript], 1835-1840.

In a letter to Lucian Minor, 1835 April 18, White reports that he will publish Minor's letter no. 5 in the next issue and hopes Minor will continue to submit letters. Asks him to carefully read the letter no. 5 and return. Notes that the Chief Justice approved of "The tale from Florian" and mentions in confidence that James Madison is the author of "Jonathan Bull and May Bull. In letters to an unidentified recipient, 1838 March 5 and October 22, White requests that his correspondent keep any papers with references to the "Southern Literary Messenger," notes that there have been numerous references to the march number, and particularly the article by A. Lynch, requests help in drafting a reply to a Catholic priest's letter regarding Lynch's article on morals. In a letter to L. J. Cist, 1840 September 14, White mentions receipt of Cist's poem "Her of the hazel eye" for publication and expresses satisfaction with an article about "Fashionable Society." Says the next issue of "The Southern LIterary Messenger" will be a brilliant contribution to "the land of American composition."
