Miscellaneous Virginia letters and essay 1849, 1866?, n.d.

The collection contains an essay "Our trip to Round Hill" by Sarah Leatherman describing a climb that enabled her party to see Bridgewater and Mt. Crawford, and including a stop at an African American home. A letter from J.M. McCue to James T. Clarke, 1849, concerns Virginia and national politics, including the legal process necessary for a division of a county, and controversy over his vote on the Wilmot proviso and support from Thomas Jefferson Randolph, and a brief meeting with Asa Whitney whose scheme to build a railroad to the Pacific he approves. A letter from P.H. Powers to his wife, 1865-1866?, describes a trip through Albemarle County to Scottsville, via Batesville. Powers comments on the destruction caused by a recent tornado, the lack of hospitality of the Coles family, and the "sordid and base feelings" in Charlottesville which cause the citizens "to give up every principle, and throw themselfves in the arms of the radicals, hoping therey to save their property."
