Bookplate belonging to George Washington [manuscript],1771.

Bookplate depicts an adaptation of the Washington family coat of arms. Washington ordered the original copper engraving and 300 prints of his bookplate from London in 1771. The bookplate also contains the family motto, "Exitus Acta Probat," which translates as "The end proves [or justifies] the deed."

George Washington (b. Feb. 22, 1732, Westmoreland County, Va.-d. Dec. 14, 1799, Mount Vernon, VA) was the first president of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1797.
