Letter and inscription of Vachel Lindsay [manuscript], 1920-1928.

Collection includes a letter from Vachel Lindsay to Miss Martha Ream, dated 1923 December 16; and an electrostatic copy of an autograph presentation inscription by Lindsay to Kermit Roosevelt on the inside front cover of "The Golden Whales of California," dated 1928 August 17. The inscription includes a draft of the first stanza of "Hail to the Sons of Roosevelt" from the "Golden Whales" volume, as well as portions of "The Virginians are Coming Again."

Nicholas Vachel Lindsay was born in Springfield, IL. He studied in Ohio, Chicago, and New York and acquired a reputation as a poet and lecturer. Lindsay became famous for his walk from Springfield, IL to New Mexico in 1912, and for an unusual method of writing poetry. In 1924 he arrived in Spokane where he worked as a columnist for the "Spokesman-Review". He returned to Springfield in 1929, and at the time of his death was a major figure in American poetry.
