University of Virginia student letters [manuscript], 1831-1838.

In a letter, 1836 October 25, Walker M. Hite, writes to his brother Isaac F. Hite, discussing his recent illness, John P. Emmet's changes in chemistry lectures and his "stale" joke about the Kilkenny cats, the formation of the University volunteers, a debt to the French instructor and his [father's?] restrictions on expenses; conveying news of friends; and asking advice on approaching the Patron about a financial matter. In letters, 1838 December 1,1839 January 1 and 1839 April 2, H[enr]y Stokes writes to his father Colin, describing his trip to Charlottesville from Lunenburg and itemizing his travel expenses, describing lectures by Gessner Harrison on classics, Charles Bonnycastle on algebra, George Blaettermann on French and Italian, and commenting that the students are well behaved and he doesn't think "there are many more wild ones amongst us to send off,"
