Gilbert Parker papers, 1898-1922.

The collection contains the corrected galley proof of chapter 25, pp 1 and 2 of his novel "The battle of the strong" and the last page of an unidentified typed manuscript about "Gabord" and "Aline." A letter, 1914 Sep 8, to Will Owen Jones sends [under separate cover] the official papers between the British and German governments before and after the outbreak of the First World War, with the speeches of the Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and Winston Churchill, and a pamphlet by Sir Edward Cook which condenses the papers. He knows that Jones may have already formed his opinion but he may not have seen the papers upon which Great Britain rests its case. A follow up letter to Jones, 1915 Oct 7., acknowledges Jones' receipt of the packet of documents concerning the war. He writes that these documents contain "the objective evidence of the case" and there is no better place for them than the consulting library of a neutral journal. "The more closely a neutral nation is brought into contact with the hard facts, the more authoritative will be the judgment of the civilized world. He knows that the U.S. is sympathetic to the British cause but will only be so if they deserve it. He will continue to send documents. A letter, 1922 Sep 23, to a Mr. Jenkins straightens out some confused arrangements for a visit. Letters to S.S. McClure note that he is very busy with a new book but plans to visit and tells him that he has made a mistake in not accepting "The Little Book of Honors" as he sold it to Century Magazine. He asks if McClure can give some sort of "send-off" for "Valmond." Also asks about "Chaps," which all the papers quote. Says that he will be married on December 5th and hopes that McClure will attend. Would like a little "boost in December." The author's Club in London will give him a dinner November 4th.
