The collection chiefly concerns George's lawsuit against Victor Talking Machine Company over royalties for the song. It includes an early typed sheet of the original seven stanzas purportedly used by George in court; "Old '97 rolls home" by his son David Gordon George, 1938, giving an account of the events; letters to his son during depositions and trials, and letters from his son regarding the lifelong campaign to gain George recognition and compensation; newspaper clippings regarding the wreck, the song and the authorship claims; greeting cards; photographs of George and other family members; and a funeral service book. Virginius Dabney is a correspondent.
