Edward Shepherd letters to his wife [manuscript], 1862-1864.

Shepherd's letters discuss life in camp, news from home, mutual acquaintances and hopes for the war's end. He mentions (usually very briefly) General Lander's funeral, fighting the Merrimack, hospitalization, losing his Bible at Fair Oaks, the retreat from Harrison's Landing, taking a vase from a cemetery vault, rumors of a raid by [Roger Atkinson?] Pryor, sleigh riding during a snow storm, a fire in Norfolk, deserters from the regiment, Confederate seige of Suffolk, oyster harvesting, cigar making for the sutlers, an expedition up the Peninsula (March 64), heavy late winter snowstorm, duty as ambulance driver and post teamster, attending theatre to see "7 sisters," scouting expedition to Cape Henry, taken prisoner near Cape Henry while on ambulance duty, and soldiers snubbed by populace when attending churches.
