Papers of Peter Sanford [manuscript], 1940-1946.

Correspondence, manuscripts, newspaper clippings and printed material of University of Virginia student Peter C. Sanford. Miscellaneous materials include UVA course materials and coursework submitted by Sanford. Also included is a January 24, 1944, letter from U.S. Under Secretary of State Edward R. Stettinius to Peter Sanford's father, Harold W. Sanford and a March 1941 pass for Peter Sanford for the National Press Club of Washington. Materials concerning the Minute Men of '40, a group formed in 1940 whose slogan was "...the faith to believe in, the right to serve, and the will to defend democracy," are included. The first chapter of the group was organized at the University of Virginia and was endorsed by UVA President John Newcomb. Sanford was a member of the group whose purpose was "to arouse and crystallize a united expression for the defense of Democracy and all that it engenders, from the campuses of America." Materials concerning Sanford's ideas and proposals for inter-regional diplomacy are included. Inter-regional diplomacy's purpose was to "overcome...disorganisation in our patriotic policymaking" through the formation of a Corps of Inter-Regional Diplomats. There are maps, papers, and newspaper clipping among these materials. Materials concerning Sanford's enlistment in the U.S. Marine Corps, his service with the Corps, and his efforts to gain admission to Marine Officer's Training School. Included is a Marine Corps Christmas greeting card. There is considerable correspondence to and from Sanford's father, Harold W. Sanford, a newspaper editor.

Peter C. Sanford, son of Harold W. Sanford, editor of the Democrat and chronicle (Rochester, NY, newspaper). University of Virginia student from September 1938 to March 1941. On the editorial board of UVA student publication, Crust, to which he contributed articles in the November 1940 and February 1941 issues.
