Papers consisting of the following: family correspondence between Thayer and Sarah S., his sister, James B., his brother, Abijah W., his father, and Mrs. Susan B. Thayer, his mother, chiefly for the period 1835-1860; 40 themes written at Harvard College; 45 items on the expedition to Nicaragua set on foot by J.W. Fabens and led by Col. H.L. Kinney, including letters of Kinney and others, stocks in the Nicaragua Land and Mining Company, and 20 clippings, including the first issue, complete, 15 September 1855, of the San Juan del Norte Central American, 1855-1856; 200 clippings of Thayer's dispatches to the London times and the New York evening post, 1860-1861; correspondence, including several letters of John Bigelow, 1861-1864; typed copy of Thayer's journal, with some letters inserted, beginning in 1852, but primarily for the period 1861-1864. Incomplete set of his dispatches (25) as Consul-General in Egypt, 1861-1863; 20 letters on the deaths of W.S. and his father, Abijah, and on his grave in Egypt, 1864-1895; pictures of W.S. and Abijah Thayer; and some miscellaneous items. The correspondence and journal have references to Charles Hale and the journal to Henry T. Buckle.
