Mason, a student at Bethel Classical and Military Academy, Fauquier Co., Va. and Charles, a student at Hanover Academy, Taylorsville, Va. write home about their studies and extracurricular activities, including drills, clubs, sports, and trips to Washington, D.C. There are frequent complaints about bad food and requests for money. Of interest are Mason's description of harrassment of local blacks, and Charles' description of the lip salve covered spot where Garfield was shot, and a poem by Charles about being the victim of a prank.
