Correspondence of Toole with his wife, Mary Jane Suddarth Toole, relating to his travels through central Virginia, his working conditions and subjects, the Richmond art colony, local politics, persons, and events; letters from their children, George Henry Toole, a cadet at Virginia Military Institute in 1855, and Mary Jane Toole Hobgood. Includes transcripts made by William B. O'Neal of the Toole letters and typed drafts, galley proofs, and plates for his book "Primitive into Painter: Life and Letters of John Toole" (1960).
