A letter from James Dearing, West Point, N.Y., 1860 March 16, concerns pending legislation affecting the Academy, and comments briefly on secession. A letter from Thomas L. Rosser, 1861 March 20, regrets that he cannot attend a wedding. An incomplete letter from an unidentified Confederate soldier, 1863 July 26th, describes a partial victory at Gettysburg "we took those heights but could not hold them." He describes the Union troops as "badly demoralized and retreating" but the Confederates had "no ammunition for another Battle."
