Letter to William M. Bailey [manuscript] 1833 July 3.

Jacob Bailey writes to his brother and apologizes for the delay in answering his letters. Baily humorously says that he has become "an important and busy personage" at Bellona Arsenal because he is the senior officer and expects to be for at least another month. He is responsible for a surgeon, a 2nd lieutenant, and a company of man; in addition, he is responsible for "about $5000 of Uncle Sam's money." Bailey describes the paper work required of him and says he does get extra pay for the extra work. He comments on his brother's pending trip to Waterville [Me.] and says he "can not tell whether you will make any conquests there" and that he can expect to "hear some strange remarks about me from the people in W. ... the girls declared that I was 'either already in love, or else I was a free will Baptist.'" Bailey includes a post script in which he instructs his brother on the proper spelling of "Bellona" and the correct way to address letters. He concludes by saying he "had begun for you a picture of Bellona Arsenal and had almost finished when I was broken off by the business forced upon me, and I have not yet had time to complete it."
