Memoirs of Thomas J. C. Fagg [manuscript], 1905 April 12.

Judge Fagg reminisces about his childhood in Albemarle County, Va., mentioning attendance at an old field school, and schools run by the Rev. Thornton Rogers, Robert D. Johnson, and George W. Trueheart; fear of escaped slaves hiding in the woods; and noted visitors to his father's hotel on the road to Fredericksburg and Washington, particularly Andrew Jackson. He recalls discussions at the hotel of the latest national politcial issues including the tariff of abominations, the Essex junto, nullification, Jackson's refusal to renew the charter of the Bank of the U.S., states rights, and economic hard times. He also discusses local fears after Nat Turner's revolt, Thomas Jefferson Randoph's proposal for gradual emancipation, and Thomas Jefferson's subsequent loss of esteem; emigration to Missouri in 1836; and a horse race between "Rodolph" and "Angora" in Louisville. Of interest is his stereotyped analysis of the character of the Negro.
