There are drafts of the following published novels: Absalom, Absalom!, 1936; As I Lay Dying, 1930; A Fable, 1954; Go Down, Moses, 1942; The Hamlet, 1940; Intruder in the Dust, 1948; Knight's gambit, 1949; Light in August, 1932; The Mansion, 1959; Mosquitoes, 1927; Pylon, 1935; Requiem for a nun, 1951; Sanctuary, 1931; Satoris, 1929; Soldier's pay, 1926; The Sound and the Fury, 1929; The Town, 1957; and The Wild Palms, 1939. Drafts of his unpublished novels are: The Devil Beats His Wife, and Elmer. In addition, there are drafts of 32 published and 10 unpublished short stories; 25 published and 8 unpublished poems, 8 television and movie scripts, and 11 articles, essays, and speeches. Published items include the short stories "Hand upon the waters," and "Tomorrow," both published in the "Saturday Evening Post," and and a newspaper article about Faulkner and the Nobel Prize, 1961 . There are also items relating to his term as postmaster of the University of Mississippi [17 items] to his service in the R.A.F. [40 items] and drafts of letters from Faulkner to various people incl. Howard Hawks and Saxe Cummings; and a few letters to Faulkner from Harcourt, Brace and Company, William Herndon, Clyde McGhee, Saul N. Wernick, Leighton M. Ballow, and Sam Marx of M.G.M. Studios [28 items. inppart, photocopies (positive)]. The collection also contains 5 slipcases of loose photographs of Faulkner, a facsimile of "As I lay dying" and a disk set of the manuscript of the novel.

Howard Winchester Hawks was born in Goshen, Indiana, on May 30, 1896. He made his career in Hollywood, working in the film industry as a screenwriter, editor, director, and producer. In 1974 he was awarded an honorary Academy Award of merit. Hawks died in Palm Springs, California, on December 26, 1977.
