Thomas Jefferson legal opinion in Wayland Case [manuscript] 1782 August 16.

Jefferson discusses the settlement of the estate of Adam Wayland of Culpeper Co., Va. He concludes that will does not protect Mrs. Wayland, who must claim legal rights. Cites Garbland vs. Mayot 2 Vernon 105, Cook vs. Cook ibid. 545, Bateman vs. Roach 9 Modern Cases in Law and Equity 104, and Coleman vs. Seymour 1 Vesey 209. His opinion is appended onto a presentation of the circumstances of the case, in another hand. An article, "The second Mrs. Wayland, an unpublished Jefferson opinion on a case in equity," 1965, by John Cook Wyllie is included (American Journal of Legal History, IX (1965), 64-68).
