L.W. Minor, aboard the U.S.S. Levant, acknowledges the receipt of several letters from home and his mother, Lucy Minor. He comments that he has given much of his money to the poor of Constantinople and that there is no prospect of being released from there before spring even in the event of an armistice. Apparently his ship, the U.S.S. Levant, could not leave port because of the Crimean War.
