Letters of John Monor Botts [manuscript] 1853 and 1856.

Botts writes to an unidentified recipient, 1852 June 2, enclosing a paper [not present] with an article by Botts concerning a compromise measure and the right of veto. He states that its circulation in the North should produce a good effect. Botts writes to J.H.E. Dubbs, 1856 February 11, concerning Botts' honorary membership in the Diagnothean Literary Society of Franklin and Marshall College.

Botts was born in Dumfries, Virginia to prominent lawyer Benjamin Gaines Botts (1776 - 1811) and his wife Jane Tyler Botts (1782 - 1811). Both of his parents died in the Richmond Theatre fire on 26 December 1811, so John and his siblings were raised by relatives in Fredericksburg. Botts attended the common schools in Richmond, Virginia, then studied law. He married Mary Whiting Blair (1801-1841), and they had several children.
