Letters of John Campbell [manuscript] 1847-62.

Letters to his family written by this army doctor during a voyage to Mexico during the Mexican War, from New York to Vera Cruz, at camp near Vera Cruz, on marches to Jalapa, Puebla, Mexico City, and other Mexican towns. Campbell left Mexico in mid-1848, and after leave was ordered to Texas in Oct., via Niagra Falls; Sandusky, Ohio; Cincinnati; New Orleans; and through San Antonio to a camp near Fredericksburg, subsequently in a camp on the Leona River, with extensive comments on Indians and Texas life. In Jan. 1850 he was ordered to California where he went to Monterey, Mission of San Miguel, Fort Reading, until 1853. There is a break in the letters until 1861, when he is at Ft. Pickens, Fla., now a major, he describes some shelling and fighting there. Persons mentioned were: Caleb Chushing, Seymour Halsey, Robert Patterson, Bennet Riley, and Winfield Scott.
