Papers of Washington Irving [manuscript] 1851, 1857.

The papers include letters, 1857 June 2, & 1851 Sept. 12, Sunnyside, N. Y., to Major Charles A. Davy, regarding the difficulties of writing his current book [Life of Washington?], Davy's ballad "The Royal Yacht Club- 'in a fix'" and the Lopez military expedition against Cuba. With the letters is a printed copy of Davy's ballad.

Washington Irving (b. April 3, 1783, New York City-d. November 28, 1859, Sunnyside, Tarrytown, New York), American author, wrote his first popular work, A History of New York, under the pseudonym Diedrich Knickerbocker. He continued to write stories and essays which made him the outstanding figure in American literature of his time and established his reputation abroad.
