Letters to Harriet Martineau [manuscript] 1860-1870.

Arnold writes to Miss Martineau about problems involved in educating the middle and lower classes. He responds to her criticisms of his 1859 and 1868 reports on continental education and comments on the value of French and German influence. He also writes about the corruption of true Christianity by dissenters as well as by the established church. Both Mary Penrose Arnold and Thomas Arnold write to Miss Martineau about giving up her journalism for the London daily news. Mrs. Arnold regrets Miss Martineau's ill health and praises speeches by William Forster.
