John Toole papers [manuscript] 1838 (1846-57) 1892.

Letters, 1840-57, to his wife Mary Jane Suddarth Toole describing his life as an itinerant portrait painter whose home was in Albemarle Co. He discusses his travels, his subjects and working conditions, local politics and social events. Working in Central Va. his visits incl.: Louisa, Madison, Orange, & Hanover Cos., and Richmond-- with an informative description of the "art colony" there [78 items. holographs signed] Also, Toole's scrap book which contains 3 pencil sketches. There are letters from Mrs. Toole, their children, George Henry Toole who describes life as a V.M.I. cadet in 1855, and Mary Jane "Jennie" Toole Hobgood; and a friend, Tom Moore of Harper's Ferry. A diary, 1867, of Mrs. Toole's, various indentures, accounts, 1872-92, of John Legrand Toole, and other Tooles. Also genealogical records for Mary Jane Suddarth Toole, 1903, undated, envelopes addrressed to John and [Mary] Jane Toole (missing stamps).
