Swift writes that, regardless of his past comments about James Branch Cabell he is interested in Cabell's opinion of A knight and a day. He also states that Cabell had "unconsciously assimilated" some of his own description used in the Stepladder when he wrote These restless heads.

Richmond author James Branch Cabell (1879-1958) is best known for his controversial book, Jurgen (1919), a fantasy set in Cabell's mythical medieval world of Poictesme (pronounced Pwa-tem).
