The literary papers include two verses of Moonlight on the Hudson [1 l. holograph 16 cm.], a quotation beginning Not in approval ... [1 l. holograph signed 6 cm.] and a verse written out by Hoffman when he was a patient at the Pennsylvania Lunatic Asylum [1 l. holograph signed 9 cm.]. Correspondence discusses literary business and was possibly written while Hoffman was editor of the American monthly and the Literary world. A letter to Col. Thomas Aspinwall in London solicits his help in finding an English publisher for Samuel Spring. A letter to an Englishman, presumably a publisher or agent, describes Hoffman's Wild scenes in forest and prairie. Among other recipients are Mrs. Oakeshott and Miss P.A. Comsock.

He began by contributing anonymous essays and articles, and soon became an editor and one of the city's most visible writers.
