They contain regulations for the port at Alexandria, insurance policies, accounts, bills, & receipts, correspondence from Gibraltor & the West Indies, & papers from 2 lawsuits in which McKnight was involved, especially one which resulted in his abduction. Included is a pass 1820 May 4 for the ship Commerce signed by president James Monroe & Secty. of State John Quincy Adams [ca. 40 items. ms., printed forms completed by hand] -- Documents & correspondence, 1796-99, 1885-86 relating to the seizure of McKnight's ship the Polly & Nancy by authorities in Antigua, and subsequent attempts of his grandsons Joseph Fornance, & William Pressley McKnight to claim damages [ca. 20 items. ms., printed forms completed by hand].
