Papers of the Cocke family [manuscript] 1823-1866.

The collection contains over 60 letters of Sally Faulcon Cocke Brent and Arthur Lee Brent from friends and family particularly Anne Blaws Cocke Cabell, John Boudoin Cocke, Philip St. George Cocke, John Hartwell Cocke, John Hartwell Cocke, Lucy Oliver Cocke, Thomas T.L. Brent, and William Brent. They convey news of family and friends, health, education of their children, daily routine and local events. Among special topics discussed are an 1823 wedding of Cocke slaves, the 1832 cholera epidemic, the training of a physician, the mishandling of James River & Kanawha Canal funds, an 1855 Episcopal Convention in Lexington, Va., the Union capture of Roanoke Island in 1862 and requisitioning of supplies for the Confederacy. A farm diary, 1853-57, of Arthur Lee Brent at Bremo Recess is included. Also of interest are a record of graves in the Cabell Cemetery at Liberty Hall, and a memo of medicine used in the treatment of diptheria.
