The notes concern arrangements for a loan for the University of Virginia. The arrangement specifies that the University should issue 20-year "certificates of loan" in sums of $1000 each, bearing 6% interest annually; further, the "trustees of Mrs. Randolph" may take "any number of these certificates, not exceeding ten or twelve." An additional note by Nicholas Philip Trist is included on each copy. John Hartwell Cocke amends one of the agreemenst on the verso and signs and dates it 23 May 1827. This agreement is also signed by Chapman Johnson and George Loyall.
