John Wayland correspondence with Harry Clemons [manuscript], 1954.

Wayland commends Clemons on his book "The University of Virginia Library, 1825-1950," offers his reminiscences of the Library and Rotunda, and encloses a book on Andrew Stevenson. Wayland discusses his own work in the library, particularly on the Hertz Collection and the papers of Dr. J. L. M. Curry. He reminisces about various professors and librarians including President Alderman, and Bennett Green, and gives his impressions about Harry Martin of whom he writes "I came to the conclusion that he was a white man, whatever blood may have run through his veins." He offers to send Clemons a fragment of one of the original capitals which he found on Carr's Hill before the President's house was built. In reply Clemons thanks Wayland for his reminiscences and states that he will be hearing further about the capital fragment.
