The papers consist of correspondence of Richard Davenport Gilliam, Jr. to his parents, Richard Davenport Gilliam and Irene Jones Gilliam, while a student at the University of Virginia in two separate periods, 1915-1917, and 1921-1924. Topics include family matters and life at the university re "Birth of a nation," preachers at St. Paul's, lecturers including Carter Glass, burning down of the chemistry building, hazing, arson at a fraternity house, student disturbances downtown, dinners at faculty houses, a suffragette march at the White House and Judge Dabney standing up to a lynch mob on the steps of the old jail.
