Civil War letters of Albert and Charles Allen.

The collection consists of letters written by Sergeant Albert F. Allen, 9th Rhode Island Volunteers and Corporal Charles H. Allen, 10th Rhode Island Volunteers to their sister Mrs. George W. Simmons, Bristol, Rhode Island. The brothers, assigned to garrison duty in Washington, D.C. and Virginia, discuss camp life, family, and state news. Specific topics include a description of their camp; weather; Rhode Island gubernatorial election, 1863; wounded and prisoners at the battle of Warrenton Junction (including Mosby's men); battle and casualties at Haymarket and Thoroughfare Gap skirmishes, 1863; illness among soldiers and a hospital stay; the visit of the Russian fleet; and a controversy over terms of service.

John Singleton Mosby (1833-1916) of Powhatan County, Va., was a lawyer and Confederate officer. Mosby was educated at the University of Virginia and worked as a lawyer in Washington County, Va., prior to the Civil War. In 1861, Mosby enlisted in the 1st Virginia Cavalry.
