The collection contains correspondence, business and legal papers, photographs and printed material of the Barhnart family of Augusta County, Va., and chiefly of George Gray Barnhart and his siblings and children. George Gray Barnhart's correspondence includes letters, 1926-1937, from his son Jennings Dodd Barnhart who ran away from home and wrote of his travels, various jobs, and life in the army. Letters from Barnhart's brothers discuss Jennings and his whereabouts. Letters from other family members convey news of family, friends, and local events including sale of land to the Shenandoah National Park. Business papers of the Barnhart, Gentry and Harris families concern the management of Arbor Hill Farm, Apple Ridge Fruit Farm, apple growing, mountain land owned by the family and settlement of the estates of Henry George Barnhart and John A. Harris. With these are deeds, indentures, rental agreements, tax records, and surveys of Augusta County property.
