James Maurice Gavin (b. Mar. 22, 1907-d. Feb. 23, 1990) was born in Brooklyn, New York. He received his commission in the infantry from West Point in 1929, and later served as an instructor at the Academy in 1940 and 1941. He advanced to the rank of brigadier general in September 1943 and served as Assistant Division Commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, parachuting with troops during the Normandy D-Day Invasion on June 6, 1944. David Gray (1870-1968) was born in Buffalo, New York. He graduated from Harvard University in 1892, and received a Doctor of Letters from Bowdoin College in 1925. He married Maude Livingston Hall Waterbury, an aunt to Eleanor Roosevelt, in 1914. Between 1893 and 1899, he worked as a reporter and editorial writer for several Rochester and Buffalo newspapers.
