In an 1889 letter Mary E. Tyler writes to Judge W.E. Ambler about a childhood playmate, declines the offer of a lamb picture, and refuses to send a photograph of herself. In a series of eight letters, 1930-1931, Carroll A. Wilson, Richard W. Hale, and Ruth E. Finley discuss Sarah Josepha Hale as the true author of "Mary's little lamb" and the disputed claim by Mary E. Tyler.
