The papers contain legal documents, 1753-1871, predominantly from Franklin and Rockingham counties, Va., but also including documents from Augusta, Bedford, Orange, Patrick, and Shenandoah counties, Va. Included are accounts, affidavits, bonds, complaints and answers therto, correspondence, deeds, depositions, indentures, leases, summonses and warrants. Most of the documents deal with personal debts, land transfers or sales, and some deal with slave ownership disputes. The papers also include a pass, 1781, for a member of the Rockingham County militia on sick leave; an affidavit, 1790, regarding the paternity of a child born out of wedlock; an appraisal, 1904, of the estate of David Funkhowser of Shenandoah County, Va., with accounts of estate property sold; an account, 1840-1841, with Royal Parrish, for household goods; a letter, 2 January 1864, from J. H. Miller, while camped in Louisa County, Va., seeking family news; and recipe, n.d., for a headache cure. There are also papers, 1781-1871, of the Kiser family, including accounts, receipts, legal papers, land records, and documents relating to the estate of Jacob Kiser. The Kiser family also figure prominently in the Rockingham County legal documents described above.
