Papers of Rosalie Evans [manuscript], 1853-1986 (bulk 1860-1950).

Correspondence and journals, 1904-1924, chiefly concern Evans's efforts to maintain control, manage, and restore the hacienda which was threatened with expropriation by the Mexican government and seizure by local agrarians. The papers document her travels, efforts to communicate with her deceased husband, and daily struggles at the hacienda. Much of this material was later published as "The Rosalie Evans Letters from Mexico" by her sister, Daisy Caden Pettus. Typescripts and correspondence concerning the book are included. The collection also contains legal and financial papers of her sister and executrix Daisy Caden Pettus, who continued the legal battle for ownership; papers of overseer George Camp including accounts, payrolls, correspondence and telegrams with Plutarco Elías Calles, president of Mexico; and papers of employee Juan Strathaus, wounded in the attack on Evans. In addition there are fictional pieces by Evans; research papers by C.E. Allen, III and S.M. Volkersz, 1965, 1986; maps of the hacienda and its irrigation system; newclippings and photographs regarding the Evans case; and a letter, 1559 May 22, Ruy Gómez de Silva to Cosimo I, Duke of Florence.
