Letter to J. King [manuscript], 1794 April 25.

Buckingham mentions his discussion with William Pitt concerning themovements of General John Graves Simcoe and the Queen's Rangers in Canada; urges Simcoe's promotion to brigadier general; and inquires about David Fanning. At the end of the letter is a note from King forwarding it to Sir Evan Nepean. King agrees that the Rangers must be kept in Canada and used in occupying York or some other port on Lake Erie and that Simcoe be given the promotion.

John Graves Simcoe was born at Cotterstock, England in 1752, the third of four sons of John and Katherine Simcoe. He spent one year at Merton College, Oxford, before entering the army as an Ensign in the 35th Foot in 1770. He was posted to Boston in 1775, and in 1777 was given command of the Queen's Rangers, a mixed (predominantly light infantry) corps made up of loyalists.
