The collection contains a letter, 22 June 1775, from George Washington, Philadelphia, Pa., to Burwell Bassett, New Kent County, Va., regarding his appointment to command the Continental Army, and Congress' approval of a Continental currency, and inviting Bassett to visit his wife at Mount Vernon. Thre is also a handwritten copy of a letter, 23 June 1775, from George Washington, Philadelphia, Pa., to Martha Washington, regarding his departure from Philadelphia and his affection for her. With these is a letter, 8 November 1828, from Eliza Parke Custis, New York, N.Y., to Simón Bolívar, eulogizing George and Martha Washington.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff.
