Papers of Dowell J. Howard [manuscript], 1942-1946.

Papers of Dowell J. Howard, Jr., consisting of his correspondence and photographs while a soldier in World War II. The letters were written to his grandmother Mrs. Henry Howard of Brookville, Md., while he was in training in the United States. They discuss life as a student at Virginia Polytechnic Institute; Camp Lee reception center; basic training center at Miami, Fl.; ordnance school, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.; the 53rd Bomb Squandron, Oklahoma City; mechanical engineering training at Oklahoma A. and M. College; 395 Infantry, Camp Maxey, Tx.; the 799th Ordnance Company; and on a troop transport. Identified photographs include Wurzburg, Germany, May 1945; Prien Airfield, Bavaria, December,1945, and return to New York harbor, 1946.
