Papers of Dr. Edward F. Birckhead and the Birckhead Family consist of letters, drawings, books, medical records, financial and legal papers, photographs, certificates, diplomas, and miscellaneous materials. The collection contains the manuscript of a children's story "The birthday dinner." Family papers include genealogical correspondence concerning Cornelius Thomas; a photograph and a postcard of Patrick Henry's Louisa County home "Roundabout"; a pre-restoration photograph of Stratford Hall; University of Pennsylvania Medical School tickets, 1840s; and certificates from the College of William and Mary and the University of Virginia. Papers of Buck Mountain Church contain correspondence of vestrymen, Diocesan Missionary Society correspondence, subscription accounts for the support of rectors, and legal documents. The collection also contains papers concerning land transactions including deeds, memoranda of agreement, and surveys for tracts of land on the Rivanna River owned by the Ferneyhough, Dickinson, Michie, Munday and Birckhead families. An 1845 Birckhead family estate division that included slaves is also present. In addition the collection contains papers, 1889, pertaining to the estate of William P. Wilkerson, an account, 1950, pertaining to the sale of "Morven," and Albemarle County tax receipts. Papers pertaining to "Solitude" in Madison County, include an 1847 survey, correspondence, contracts and deeds.
