Alexander family papers [manuscript], 1800-1890.

Papers Gustavus Brown Alexander and Charles G. Alexander document the various activities and interests of the Alexander family including agriculture especially the growing and marketing of wheat; legal matters; financial matters; land holdings; business ventures; and St. Paul's Church. Topics include Charles's service as justice of the peace, Yuba County, Calif., during the gold rush, in the 15th Regiment, Virginia Cavalry, during the Civil War, as a meteorological surveyer for the U.S. War Department, 1874-1875, and as schoolmaster, Potomac District Public School #4. There is a substantial amount of material concerning slavery particularly re inheritance, hiring, runaways, medical care and sales. Other topics of interest include the guano fertilizer craze, overseer contracts, Reconstruction, a wharf at Bpyd's hole on the Potomac, disputed road construction, real estate transactions, estate settlements, local politics, medical services for owners and slaves, and debts and taxes.
