Papers of Robert Augustus Stiles [manuscript], 1869-1903.

The collection contains chiefly personal correspondence and papers of this former Major of Robert E. Lee's Civil War staff. Some papers relate to his book "Four Years with Marse Robert" and other writings; other papers relate to a speech given at the dedication of a Confederate monument at the University of Virginia cemetery. Correspondents include: Robert Alonzo Brook, Churchill Jones Gibson, John James Lafferty, Philip Watkins McKinney, Stiles's father Joseph Clay Stiles, and John West. Also included is a letter, 1890 April 26, Charlottesville, Va., from John Barbee Minor to Stiles, Richmond, Va., commenting on the book "Why the Solid South?", on Abraham Lincoln's perceptive plans for the post-Civil War South, and on national politics.

Wirt County was named for William Wirt, who gained fame in Virgtinia as a lawyer and perhaps is best known for his role in the prosecution of Aaron burr for treason.
