Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858) was a Missouri Democrat who served as a senator from 1821 to 1851. He opposed both abolitionism and the extension of slavery into new territories, but was a staunch advocate of westward expansion of the United States. He died in 1858. John Strode Barbour was born in 1790 in Culpeper Co., Va. He graduated from the College of William and Mary. After studying law, he was admitted to the bar. He served in Virginia House of Delegates. He served in U.S. Congress from 1823-1833 and was a member of the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1829/30. Barbour died in 1855.
