Papers of the Willis family [manuscript], 1752-1863 (bulk 11758-1793).

The collection contains letters, accounts, notes, contracts, and clippings pertainint to three generations of men named Francis Willis, chiefly of Gloucester County, Va. Included are a bill presented in London, 1758, with two six pence revenue stamps attached; blacksmith's accounts; merchant's accounts; account of a debt due George Fitzhugh; a suit brought by Lewis Burwell; an issue of the Virginia Gazette 1770 August 9; and a letter discussing an inheritance problem in the Washington family. Slavery items include a deed, 1773, for Gloucester County slaves and land; a 1789 court decision settled partially through transfer of slaves; and a 1791 case involving a runaway slave. There is a clipping, 1826 June 9, from the Petersburg Intelligencer about a citizen's committee formed to raise funds for Thomas Jefferson; Civil War items include a certification of resignation from West Point, 1861 Feb. 6, for Edward S. Willis of Georgia; a letter of thanks for a battle flag, 1863, from the 12th Georgia Regiment; a blank oath of allegiance to the Confederacy, 1863; and two clippings concerning Robert Toombs.
