Letters, 1904-1940, of Mrs. Coles of Proffit, Va. to members of the Bryan family including Margaret Randolph Minor Bryan, Margaret R. Bryan Williston, Evelyn Bryan Bullitt, Elizabeth Coalter Bryan Williston, Isobel Stewart Bryan Richmond and Mary Waters Bryan Hitchcock. Mrs. Coles sends news of herself and family, enquires after the Bryans and arranges visits in letters which portray the life of rural blacks in Albemarle Co., Va. and their interaction with former masters and the white community. With the letters are a few to Mrs. Coles from the above women, transcripts of most of the letters and 2 photographs of Mrs. Coles and her husband Jefferson. The collection also contains letters, 1913-1916, of William Wardlaw Minor chiefly to his brother Richmond T. Minor about farm routine at Windiknowe, his family, and daily activities. He comments frequently on books, religion, Virginia and national politics, the banking business in Charlottesville and World War I.
