John Cowper Granberry papers [manuscript], 1861-1876.

Granberry's early letters describe life at the University of Virginia, some of the faculty, particularly James Holcombe, and attitudes towards the secession crisis. The majority of the letters were written during his service as Confederate chaplain and discuss religious acitivity among the troops as well as the Seven Days Battles in which he was wounded and captured, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and the siege of Petersburg. He frequently comments on war news from elsewhere in the Confederacy. Eight post war letters, 1866-1868, 1876 and 1878 describe church conferences he attended particularly in New Orleans. There are also eleven letters to him from his second wife, Ella, conveying family news.
