William Faulkner research papers [manuscript], 1930-1990.

Research files of James (Jim) Hinkle concerning his work on the literary works of William Faulkner and, to a lesser extent, Ernest Hemingway. The collection contains correspondence, scholarly manuscripts, student papers, notes, printed articles, brochures, miscellaneous printed material, card files and photographs. Research files on Faulkner's novels contain manuscripts of articles by Hinkle, particularly "A reader's guide for William Faulkner's The Unvanquished"; as well as papers by other scholars and students, questions and answers, glossaries, chronologies, genealogies, quizzes and copies of the texts. Miscellaneous Faulkner files contain conference materials; dissertation abstracts; literature files on a number of authors and on literary theory; brochures, maps, photographs and miscellaneous material on Mississippi; etymological research; the newsletter "Snopes pay"; and theses. Articles files contain copies of published articles on Faulkner's novels and stories, and texts. Miscellaneous files contain interviews; reviews and reminiscences; articles on Hemingway, southern history, and Mississippi; and maps. Of interest is Hinkle's concordance (on card files) of words used in Faulkner together with definitions of the terms. Other scholars represented in the collection include Noel Polk, Louis Daniel Brodsky, and Thomas L. McHaney.
