Papers of Charles Plummer Morrill [manuscript], 1862-1907 (bulk 1862-1866).

Civil War Papers of Charles Plummer Morrill, 24th Maine, and Wilbur F. Hawxhurst, 65th Ohio, consist chiefly of letters to relatives. Hawxhurst discusses family and local news, camp life, Ohio regiments, especially the 65th and captains Wilbur F. Hinman and Joseph H. Wilsey, his duties as a hospital nurse and company clerk, the Atlanta campaign, the battles of Resaca and Nashville, and the postwar occupation of Victoria County, Texas. There are scattered derogatory references to African Americans. Morrill discusses camp life; duties in his regiment's hospital department; his regiment's stay in New York, November 1862-January 1863 where he heard Henry Ward Beecher preach; transport on the Lizzie Southard to New Orleans with a stop at Fortress Monroe and Hampton Hospital; and New Orleans in February 1863. Sketches are enclosed in two letters. With these letters are a letter from Cyrus [Birney?] describing Washington in 1864, and a family letter, n.d. The collection also contains military discharge papers for Hawxhurst and Morrill's brother George, an incomplete draft of reminiscences by Morrill, a photograph of Hawxhurst, ambrotpyes and tintype of Morrill and two unidentified people, and an albumen print of an unidentified Atlanta woman.
